“I’ve been colored. I’ve been negro. I’ve been so many things in my time, that’s why when they ask for race on those forms I put what it actually is, ‘stolen Africans’, and let them sort it out.” —

“Since 1998, approximately 75,000 students have been denied any financial aid (grants or loans) simply because they have a drug conviction somewhere in their past. No other conviction, including murder and rape, automatically results in the loss of aid.” —

Kathleen R. Sandy, “Commentary: The Discrimination Inherent in America’s Drug War: Hidden Racism Revealed by Examining the Hysteria over Crack,” 54 Ala. L. Rev. 665 (2003). (via letterstomycountry)

Wait a minute. How likely is it that a convicted murderer or rapist is going to be free to even go to college; much less apply for financial aid? And would the numbers even be comparable? 75,000? I hope we don’t have 75,000 convicted murderers/rapists just walking around. I’d much rather take College Algebra with a weed head.
